Thanks to the Coolum Advertiser to making the community aware of the impact of COVID-19 on the "gig economy". We all need to be looking out for each other at this time. Coolum Advertsier_19 March 2020_Page2
Early Voting Centres are now open and in the interest of preventing the spread of COVID-19 through social distancing I would encourage Division 9 voters to vote now and avoid the crowds on election day. The Early Voting Centre at Coolum RSL is open -
9am - 5pm: Monday 16 - Friday 20 March 9am - 6pm: Monday23 - Friday 27 March There are additional voting centres through the Sunshine Coast that will have extended hours to assist with early voting. These hours will apply to Early Voting Centres at Nambour, Caloundra, Birtinya, and Maroochydore.
It's going to be difficult to staff all of these centres so I am posting my How to Vote Card here to give you information on How to Vote for me. With further announcements from the government today regarding COVID-19, I think we all know we are in for some challenging days, weeks, months ahead. How we respond as individuals and a community has never been more important.
I’m writing this after just receiving a very angry phone call from another Division 9 candidate and, given his response, I am conscious that there will soon be a ridiculous attempt to discredit me for the purposes of winning votes in the upcoming Council election. It’s been an interesting day to say the least. Yesterday my husband discovered someone he has been in contact with has tested positive to COVID -19. My husband’s response was to head straight to Nambour Hospital to ask for testing but he was turned away because he is not showing any signs of the virus and is not considered a close contact. Not happy with this response, my husband contacted our local GP and asked if he could get tested… but received the same response – that he does not need testing and does not need to self-isolate. My husband frequently works in public environments and as an over precaution has persisted with his efforts. Today he presented at a QML designated testing centre and was given “The Test”. Whilst my husband has also been told he does not need to self-isolate he has taken it upon himself to do so regardless. I have also sought medical advice asking if there are any precautions I or my son should be taking – the response was similar – continue with good hygiene and go about our daily business as usual… school, work, the campaign trail. I have chosen to take the added precaution of notifying people I come in contact with of the situation. This morning I arrived at the ABC Sunshine Coast studio for the Division 9 Election Grill. On revealing the events of the last two days, the studio asked if I would be happy to participate in the interview via phone outside the building. I agreed to do this and also agreed to speak with the presenter about the reason this was occurring. ABC Sunshine Coast then made a further decision to cancel the Election Grill and sent all candidates home. This afternoon I received a phone call from another Division 9 candidate suggesting I have put the candidates and the community at risk by attending the ABC studio this morning. I obviously refute this claim given my actions to seek out and follow the advice of government health officials and my further action of notifying people I come in contact with of my situation. In times of uncertainty and rapid change it is more important than ever that our community leaders act in a way that does not incite undue panic or alarm. Taking the advice of public health authorities as well as making our own personal choices regarding health and hygiene will be important over the coming weeks and months. Working with the community to support each other through difficult times is the challenge we need to embrace. Scaremongering and opportunism should be rejected. As the old saying goes….Adversity doesn’t build character. It reveals it. I will be at The shop coolum again this coming Wednesday and I'd love you to join me. At last week's catchup we discussed everything from from weed and waste management, improvements to community facilities, the future of the Coolum Visitor Information Centre, public art strategies and the contributions organisations like the University of the Sunshine Coast can make to our community. I'm starting this job the way I intend to continue it - positioning the community as my first priority, building strong relationships and working on solution focussed responses to our issues and concerns. There's no need to book a time, just drop in for a coffee and a chat. I'll be at The Shop (across the road from Coolum Surf Club) on Wednesday 11 March (7:30am - 9am) Thanks to Gaye and Dave from The shop coolum for supporting this wonderful opportunity to get the community talking! |
